Established in 2001, the .NAME generic top-level domain name extension is the single TLD planned for personal sites only. These domain names can consist of personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other labels people are popular by. Initially, only 3rd-level registrations were allowed, so if you planned to acquire john.doe.name, you were required to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also allowed. Already grabbed third-level domains remained working.
